About Menorca Cruising School

At Menorca Cruising School we specialise in RYA courses for beginners, families and novice skippers. Mahon Harbour provides 3.5 miles of sheltered waters which are perfect for getting a feel for the yacht. We can then set out to explore more than 40 sheltered coves around the island's 80 miles circumference. We are very used to mixed ability teaching and partners with differing abilities can take different courses on the same yacht.

Our Aims

  • To strike the right balance between thorough, humorous tuition and an enjoyable holiday
  • To suit the particular needs of each individual.
  • To make it possible for those who wish to cruise under sail to acquire the necessary skills.
  • To encourage high standards of safety.
  • To encourage family cruising.
  • To provide a holiday in a relaxed personal atmosphere that is both instructive and fun.

Menorca Cruising School Founder - "Mike Morris"
Mike Morris established Menorca Cruising School in 1984. As well as extensive cruising experience he represented the U.K. racing both dinghies and Yachts. From 1976-1983 he was owner and principal of the R.Y.A. recognised Fowey Cruising School in Cornwall. The R.Y.A.'s decision to recognise cruising schools operating in the Mediterranean enabled him to start the first R.Y.A. recognized, specialist, non-tidal teaching establishment in the Med. It was during a sailing trip around the Mediterranean that he fell in love with Menorca and realised that Mahon Harbour was the perfect base for sailing training.

Principal - John Davies In 2007 John Davies took over as Principal of Menorca Cruising School. John Davies and his partner Liz Parr have been resident on Menorca for 5 years. They worked alongside Mike at Menorca Cruising for 2 years before purchasing the business in January, allowing Mike to enjoy early retirement. Mike continues to be involved in the business as he retains ownership of one of the Bavaria 34's - Alacrity.

Our Instructors

We are very conscious that our school is only as good as our instructors, Pere and Dave. To this end their most important qualities are patience, good humour, and a sense of fun. Apart from their sailing skills, coaching abilities and experience, you will enjoy your course because you enjoy their company. They are chosen from experienced backgrounds which bring a highly professional approach to the training and yacht maintenance. You can be sure that your yacht will be kept in excellent condition throughout your course.

Pere Valera - RYA Ocean Yachtmaster Instructor

Pere is our highly popular Chief instructor. He recently returned from Menorca Cruising's Winter Program which involved passages from Menorca to the Caribbean via Gibraltar, Cran Canaria, Cape Verve Islands and Antigua. Pere has been sailing around Menorca since he was a child and therefore has extensive knowledge of the coastline and local winds.
One of Pere's other talents is a love of cooking. You will be sure of a mouthwatering Mediterranean lunch on any of his courses.

"On behalf of the four of us (Dave, Tim, Graham and myself) I just wanted to thank you for an excellent week's sailing .. what made it particularly special was our instructor. Dave blended calm assurance with breadth of knowledge, and we all benefited from his enormous experience. On top of that he was warm and friendly and an excellent sea-going companion! Please pass on our thanks to Dave for a very enjoyable and memorable week." Dave Cledon
